VANUATU

BEING NAMED, REACHING PUBERTY, MARRIAGE AND DEATH ARE THE TIMES FOR CELEBRATION AND CEREMONY FOR PEOPLE LIVING ON THE VULCANIC LAND OF MT YASUR IN VANUATU. I WAS INVITED TO PHOTOGRAPH A NAMING CEREMONY FOR A THREE MONTH OLD. THE TWO VILLAGES CAME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE AND THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME THE CHILDS MOTHERS VILLAGE MEETS THE BABY. THE WOMEN PREPARE A FEAST WHILE THE MEN DRINK KAVA AND DECIDE THE NAME OF THE CHILD. PRESENTS ARE GIVEN FROM THE CHILDS FATHERS VILLAGE TO THE CHILDS MOTHERS AS APPRECIATION FOR THE WOMENS' FERTILITY AND THE LIFE BROUGHT INTO THE WORLD. THIS CHILD WAS NAMED JOHN.
